New Tax Rules That Will Impact Your Gifts to Goodspeed
On Friday, March 27, the Congress passed and the President signed into law the Coronavirus Aid, Relief, and Economic Security (CARES) Act, a $2 trillion economic stimulus package that will have an impact on your gifts to Goodspeed Musicals and other non-profit organizations this year.
For those who don’t itemize deductions: An “above the line” adjustment to income of up to $300 per taxpayer ($600 for a married couple) can be taken for donations to qualifying charities. This will reduce your taxable income. This adjustment only applies to those who take the standard deduction.
For those who itemize deductions: You can deduct donations that equal up to 100% of your adjusted gross income (up from 60% previously). This new deduction only applies to gifts made to a public charity like Goodspeed Musicals, not to private foundations or donor advised funds.
For corporations: Corporations may deduct up to 25% of taxable income, up from the previous limit of 10%.
